Dr Orbán Zoltán

Associate professor at the University of Pécs Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, Head of the Institute of Smart Technology and Engineering

Zoltán Orbán is Director of the Institute of Engineering and Smart Technology and leader of the Structural Diagnostics and Analysis Research Group at the University of Pécs, Faculty of Engineering and IT.
His research interest is focussed on the non-destructive testing, assessment and rehabilitation of existing structures.
Over his more than two decades of work experience, Zoltán Orbán has combined teaching and research activities with a long track record of working on real world civil engineering projects.
His recent consulting works include the diagnostics and structural assessment of numerous historical buildings such as the Csiky Gergely Theatre in Kaposvár, the Fekete Sas Hotel in Székesfehérvár and the rehabilitation design of many industrial buildings and bridges throughout the country.
Previously he worked as a bridge engineer at Hungarian Railways and was a member of International Union of Railway (UIC)’s Panel of Structural Experts Group from 2000 to 2014. He was initiator and chairman of the international project on the “Assessment, Inspection and Maintenance of Masonry Arch Bridges” and has been involved in a number of international projects related to bridges and historical structures.
He was co-work package leader of EU FP7 “MAINLINE project – MAINtenance, renewal and Improvement of rail transport infrastructure to reduce Economic and environmental impacts” and scientific leader of the EU Cross-border cooperation programme “HISTORICAL STRUCTURES – Development of investigation and analysis techniques for the assessment and lifetime expectancy of historical structures” project.
As an Associate Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering he plays an active role in the training of civil engineering students both on bachelor and master levels.
